Focus areas of research

As an academic higher education institution, the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd stands out thanks to its intensive research activities that boast both a basic and application-oriented focus.

The academic profile of education, health and interculturality is reflected in the large number of research activities undertaken. The University has succeeded in consistently expanding its research activities in recent years, which also has a knock-on effect on the levels of third-party funding acquired and emphasises the high priority of research at our institution.

Education research:

As a modern higher education institution in the field of education studies, our research is focused on education processes in the contexts of kindergartens, schools, teaching and internal (further) training for teachers, and addresses the core areas of teaching research and media education, subject-specific teaching methodology, internal teacher training, language development, MINT promotion and education about Europe.

Interdisciplinary health promotion:

The field of health promotion and prevention is likewise strong in research and deals with the focus areas of 'Promoting healthy lifestyles', 'Health promotion in settings' and 'Occupational health promotion'.

In addition to the disciplines of health psychology and health sociology, the inter-sectoral research field of health also incorporates nutrition science and sports science.

Migration and participation research:

Intercultural education, diversity, heterogeneity, welcome culture and social processes of integration are academic focus areas at our University. The exploration of sociological aspects – such as the analysis of social phenomena with regard to migration – and of education science with a focus on learning, development and socialisation also plays an important role, as does research in the fields of multilingualism, learning a second or foreign language, and language as a cultural medium.
