International Stay for MINT-Education

The project “Act & Reflect smart: STEM Education in Motion” contributes to preparing student teachers to deal with increasing (inter-)cultural diversity (e.g. through migration, inclusive teaching and the globalisation of the world of work), especially in German schools. Innovative internationalisation measures enable student teachers to plan, analyse and implement differentiated lessons on the basis of didactic concepts and to acquire a high level of intercultural competence. This enables them to master the resulting challenges in a reflective manner.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is funding the project as part of the “Internationalisierung der Lehramtsausbildung” (Internationalisation of Teacher Training) funding line financed by the BMFTR from January 2025 to December 2029.

We are pursuing the following objectives with this project:

  1. increase the international mobility of STEM teachers and students
  2. establishing and expanding institutionalised international university cooperation with a STEM focus
  3. creation of networks extending beyond the funding period
  4. structural development and adaptation of study programmes for the internationalisatin of teacher training - through digital formats as well as by supporting less mobile student teachers
  5. creation of an Englisch-language teaching programme in STEM subjects to increase the international appeal of the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd

In order to achieve these objectives, the project is based upon a comprehensive catalogue of measures. The catalogue focuses on three level

  • International mobility
  • Internationalisation@home
  • Structural change

(1) International mobility: STEM teachers and university lecturers are given the opportunity to study and teach abroad in various formats (summer schools, short-term lectureships overseas, semester exchanges or international theses).

(2) Internationalisation@home: We also give students who cannot or do not wish to travel abroad the opportunity to gain international experience. A hybrid course programme is created with materials on simulated practice (vignettes).

(3) Structural change: To make it easier for students to gain international study experience, we want to improve and consolidate structural conditions. We are intensifying existing collaborations with partner universities and expanding the network with new partnerships. We are also committed to anchoring internationalisation in the curriculum. This makes it easier to gain credit for study abroad.
