INSTITUTE OF NURSING SCIENCE – BACHELOR OF SCIENCE NURSING

COURSE OVERVIEW

The University of Education in Schwäbisch Gmünd offers a BSc degree in nursing, qualifying students to practice as a nurse. Following the German legislation of recognition of healthcare professional qualifications, the primary qualifying orientation of the BSc course enables the students to obtain both the state professional recognition as a nurse and the university degree "Bachelor of Science".

In particular, the degree qualifies the students to:

  • Explore and evaluate scientific findings, especially in the field of nursing and healthcare

  • Practice evidence-based nursing by making individual, scientifically based nursing decisions

  • Provide professional nursing care for acutely and chronically ill people in different settings across the lifespan

  • Offer individually tailored advice regarding care needs for those with care needs and their relatives

The successful completion of the Bachelor's degree (BSc Nursing) qualifies graduates to enter the Masters’ degree courses, for example, in Nursing Education and Nursing Science, and qualifies students for the entry to doctoral studies.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course includes both practical and theoretical learning content, and students spend time both at university and practice placements. The practice placements are compulsory to enable later registration as a qualified nurse. Theoretical teaching is based in the University of Education in Schwäbisch Gmünd, while practice placements are offered in the clinics of our cooperation partner, (the Ostalb Clinics) in locations of Mutlangen, Ellwangen, and Aalen. Practical professional techniques and skills are further developed in SkillsLab. Regular session in SkillsLab offers a third place of learning, enabling students to develop and reflect their nursing practice in a safe and protected environment. Towards the end of the course students will write their BSc thesis under the supervision of the academic staff.

QUALIFIED NURSES WITHOUT BSc DEGREE

Qualified nurses without BSc, who have already passed their examinations, can obtain further academic qualifications. This course enables practicing professionals to develop their expertise and, in keeping with the principle of lifelong learning, to qualify for further studies at Master and Doctoral

level. Here, parts of the previous nursing qualification can be recognised, thus enabling faster progression through the studies.
